Volunteering at Hog Island

Part of FOHI’s commitment to making the Audubon Camp at Hog Island a sustainable venture is to provide volunteers to help with opening and closing the camp and then to help during the program sessions. Our volunteer team is growing. Many are finding Hog Island to be their summer home, spending time with returning friends and making new ones.

Our volunteer brochure gives an overview of what to expect.

To get a flavor of what your volunteer stint will be like, read about upcoming (and past) service week sessions.

  1. I was a student assistant way back in 1961 and second boatman in 1962. Please let me know if you come uo short some summer for volunteers . . . am flexible and could possibly “jump in” at the last minute. “Noting is accomplished unless someboday cares”.

    • Hello Joe, This is a much-belated response. So glad to hear from a former student assistant and second boatman. We can always use a volunteer such as yourself. And your quote is so true. It has proved itself time and time again with Hog Island. I hope to see you back on the island. Juanita

    • Joe,

I was a Student Assistant from 1961 to 1964. I remember you well. I was Second Boatman in 1963 and 1964.

  2. Hello! I am a camper for the Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens (second session 2013) and I found out about the FOHI while at the camp. It is definitely something that I am interested in and I was wondering what the age limit would be for volunteers. I also want to thank you again for the fantastic time I had, it has really changed me and I think about it every day!

    • Hello Rosemary,

Yes, I remember you well. As you know, many of our volunteers are former teen campers, so if you become one, you will be part of a special group of passionate Hog Island supporters. As you saw when you were here, our volunteers work hard, yet get to enjoy and participate in many of the camp’s activities. I’ll be posting the volunteer schedule within a few days at https://fohi.org/support/volunteer-signup/ Juanita

  3. Hi Juanita,

This is Jenny Welch from Florida. I have a new email address because we are in the middle of a move. I will soon have a new address and will send that as soon as I can.

I am writing to see about volunteering again this summer.
I have signed up to be a camper this year for Hands-on Bird Science June 19 to 24, 2016,
If possible, I would like to volunteer for the two weeks before my camp week session.

Please let me know if this is possible.

    Thank you,

  4. Hola Jaunita,

I would like you to consider me to volunteer for a week or more.

I can be available from June 20 to August 20.

    • Hello Sigrid, Sorry I did not see this earlier. Looking forward to learning which sessions you choose. Juanita

  5. I spent a week on Hog Island 2 summers ago and am interested in volunteering. I am not skilled as in maintenance, but could help cook or clean for campers. How can I learn more?

  6. Hello! I was at Educators Week last July, and would love to volunteer for that week this year, 2019. I’m a retired teacher, member of Audubon, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I’d love to help out with anything you need. Please let me know what to do. Thanks.

    • Hello Anton,

That’s wonderful to hear that you would like to come back as a FOHI volunteer. The volunteer dates for the 2019 season will go live on the FOHI website on October 18. Looking forward to seeing you back on the island.
