Service learning is a concept that was energized and popularized following the heyday of the Peace Corp. Applied to Hog Island, its purpose is to get the camp ready for the summer season and enjoy the island’s outstanding setting in beautiful Muscongus Bay.
In exchange for tackling a list of camp chores, you’ll receive the benefit and camaraderie of working together with others that love Hog Island. You will be well fed and cared for, and we’ll see to it that a first rate educational experience is part of the mix as well.
We’ll do some early season on-island birding as well as run the Puffin IV out around Eastern Egg Rock to conduct a visual inventory of its seabird colony, including the clown-like Atlantic puffin. Tom Schaefer, past president of the Friends of Hog Island, will provide a workshop on an exciting history project he is conducting for the island.
Mingle with campers from summers past, chat with officials from Maine Audubon, hear the latest updates on Hog Island’s strategic planning process and capital campaign prospects, and help re-energize the buildings and grounds so dear to us all. Session cost is just $400.
